The Shawn Walsh Hockey Center project consisted of 8,500 SF of renovations and a 10,000 SF addition to Harold Alfond Arena. Scope included amenities that complements and maintains the tradition of “home and heart” for University of Maine hockey players and fans. The facility, named after a beloved longtime hockey coach, includes the Bear Necessities athletic store, team fitness center, and Hall of Fame display area.
Fitness facilities include a new weight room, training room, equipment room, hydro therapy facilities, and team lounge, as well as offices for the coaching staff. The public area includes a Hall of Fame display and concession area.
Bear Necessities is “merch central” for both students and the tens of thousands of sports fans who attend games annually within Alfond Arena and the adjacent Alfond Stadium. Designed to deliver visual excitement while maximizing product turnover, the Bear Necessities store experiences robust sales.
In addition to being an important resource for sports fans and revenue source for UMaine, Shawn Walsh Hockey Center has proven to be a major component in the recruitment of Division I athletes.
