Windmoor Healthcare is a 144-bed psychiatric hospital in Clearwater, Florida offering in and outpatient psychiatric services, crisis stabilization, dual diagnosis program, geriatric inpatient treatment, electroconvulsive therapy, and ambulatory opiate detox program.
WBRC has completed several projects at Windmoor, including several renovations and a 24-bed expansion. The new psychiatric unit, located in a vacant portion of the hospital’s second floor. The renovated space has a single point of access from the main hospital and clear, straightforward circulation patterns. Each semi-private patient bedroom has natural light and views of the exterior, and access to a water closet and handwashing station and a separate shower/bathing facility. Finishes within the unit provide a home-like atmosphere with harmonious contrasting colors and textures. The unit’s multi-functional central core area includes a space for TV viewing and another district area for group counseling and other activities, and a nourishment room, all allowing visual observation from the nurse’s station. Support spaces include a secure medication preparation room with direct access from the nurse’s station, as well as a clean supply room, soiled workroom and staff break room.
This cost-effective reuse of space helped meet an immediate need for psychiatric patient care beds in Pinellas County at a location that is easily accessible to surrounding communities.
