Capehart Play Park

Bangor, ME

Location(s): Davis Road

Client: Bangor Housing Authority

Size: 2.7 acres

Contractor: Hughes Brothers

Bangor Housing Authority’s new Capehart Play Park is packed with options to play, exercise, picnic, or simply rest in the shade. The 2.7 acre urban park features a splash pad, large playground, full-sized basketball court, exercise circuit, walking trail, and picnic pavilion. The park is located on the west end of a 525+ unit family housing neighborhood, which includes nearly 700 kids under age 16.

The park includes the city’s first Splash Pad, which will operate seasonally. The playground offers traditional equipment for climbing and sliding, as well as unusual equipment such as a track ride/zip line. The park’s exercise circuit, which includes both resistance and cardio options, face into the park so parents can keep moving while they supervise their children. The entire park is designed for barrier-free use by persons with physical disabilities. To enhance safety, the park’s automatic lights turn off at night to discourage nighttime use. The park is also equipped with security cameras and is located directly across the street from the housing authority’s administrative offices and community center. Open 8 am to dusk, the new park brings a versatile place for multiple generations to stay active — and is also free and within walking distance for hundreds of Capehart residents.
