Seeking to improve and update its ambulatory surgery processes, Northern Light AR Gould Hospital relocated its Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to the hospital’s Day Surgery facility. The existing rooms were reconfigured to achieve the desired operational flow. This included a rework of major utilities and expansion of the house steam system to accommodate the new sterilization equipment.
Entered through an attached Ante Room, the SPD’s Decontamination Room houses adjustable-height decontamination sinks, self-contained endoscope sterilizers, and a table-top ultrasonic cleaner dedicated for eye instruments. A new staff bathroom with a shower can be accessed through the Ante Room.
Pass-through windows allow for the safe transfer of surgical instruments into the Prep/Pack side of the facility. Here SPD staff have dedicated space for assembling sterile instruments packs, completing the “sterile loop” required for cleaning surgical instruments. General storage space was also completely renovated to become clean SPD storage. The suite features integrally-coved, seamless, resilient flooring and contiguous solid surface walls for ease of cleaning.
