UMaine Field Hockey Complex

Orono, ME

Location(s): University of Maine

Client: UMaine Athletics

Size: 70,000 SF

Athletics Consultants Activitas and Crawford Architects

Contractor: Sargent Corporation

The new Black Bear Field Hockey Complex is a fitting home for the University of Maine student-athletes, coaches, staff, and fans who contribute to this conference-dominating program. This thoughtfully-designed facility is part of the UMS Transforms initiative, made possible through the generous support of the Harold Alfond Foundation. UMaine Field Hockey Complex was designed in conjunction with Activitas and Crawford Architects.

The 70,000 SF, $8.3M complex offers a new knitted nylon synthetic turf playing field with open-air, bricked walled team areas. More than 500 fans can watch the action from chairback and bleacher seating. Game announcers add commentary from an enclosed three-level press box at center field. The top level of the press box also serves as a film room, where athletes and coaches can review the action captured by Spideo cameras in several locations. The project included converting old-generation sports lighting to LED fixtures, installing two new scoreboards, and enabling streaming capacity around the field’s perimeter.

The future of field hockey across the region is being enhanced by UMaine Field Hockey Complex, as it was designed to accommodate local youth and high school field hockey teams and tournaments.

The project was recognized as a 2024 Distinguished Sports Facility by the American Sports Builder Association (ASBA) in the Outstanding Sports Fields: Single Field Facilities category.
