Opening in early 2028, the new multipurpose Morse Arena is a 2,660-seat basketball venue that will redefine the game-day experience at the University of Maine. Made possible by a $10 million gift from alumni Philip and Susan Morse, this transformative project is designed as a statewide hub for sports and engagement, further reinforcing the University’s role as Maine’s premier athletic and cultural destination.

With an intimate bowl design and a mix of chairback, bleacher, and courtside seating, fans will be brought closer to the action than ever before. Athletes, coaches, and visitors will benefit from a comprehensive suite of modern amenities that support recruitment, performance, and the Black Bears’ pursuit of national tournament success.

Included features:

  • New locker rooms for the men’s, women’s, and visiting teams
  • State-of-the-art sport performance facilities
  • A film room for review and analysis
  • Dedicated dining and nutrition areas
  • Modern lounges with enhanced lighting and the latest technology
  • Hot and cold recovery plunge pools and rehabilitation resources

More than just UMaine basketball’s home court, Morse Arena is envisioned as a true gathering place for students, fans, and visitors. A 4,000‑square‑foot club area will host events and groups, while the building will also house the University’s new football operations center, complete with offices and conference rooms that will create stronger connectivity between coaches and student‑athletes.

Design Intent and Details:
Strategically located at the south end of the football stadium, the arena helps frame and elevate the Athletics Village, creating a cohesive, visually striking sports district.

An iconic glass corner marks the main entrance, hovering above the lobby while anchored by traditional campus brick and granite. The design frames views to the iconic “M” on Memorial Gymnasium’s west façade and completes a semi-enclosed “quad” in tandem with the nearby Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Alfond Arena. Though each building employs a distinct architectural language, together they celebrate and define the entrance to the Athletics Village.

Inside, the arena delivers a unique, multi-level fan experience. Visitors ascend a grand two-story stair from the lobby to the concourse, where a completely column-free bowl is revealed. From this vantage point, fans can take in the entire seating area and court, creating a visual and physical connection that engages the community and amplifies excitement for every event.

The arena also provides comprehensive support for student athletes. Versatile team spaces accommodate basketball and football programs alike. Overlooking the football field, an outdoor terrace and luxury club space can host over 300 patrons and serve multiple functions, from a campus luncheon to a club-level game experience or a full team meeting.

Throughout the building, strategic graphics and branding bring energy and pride to the space, celebrating University of Maine athletics in a way that will make Morse Arena one of the most dynamic buildings on campus.
