Buchanan Alumni House

University of Maine | Orono, ME

Location(s): Orono, Maine

Client: University of Maine

Size: 32,000 SF

Contractor: Nickerson & O’Day

Buchanan Alumni House welcomes alumni and visitors to the University of Maine’s flagship campus in Orono. This three-story 32,000 SF building, located at a major campus entrance, incorporates Maine vernacular architectural forms that bridge it and the residential styles of the neighborhood. Buchanan House services as the headquarters for the University of Maine Foundation as well as the UMaine Alumni Association.

Special features include a large brick-poured courtyard, “grand house” meeting spaces, and a fiber-optic bear constellation in the entry’s two-story rotunda. The facility includes stately meeting rooms, conference rooms, library, gallery, catering kitchen, and an alumni call center.

Outside, gardens and exterior spaces form a gateway to the campus. Teak benches, arbors, a pavilion, and walking paths draw users through butterfly, rose, and perennial beds.

WBRC provided fundraising support graphics as well as design and construction oversight.
