Downtown Bangor’s historic Freese’s Department Store building had not been fully occupied since it closed in 1985. Thirty years later, the building is all in use, thanks to new commercial space and 10 market-rate apartments on the bottom three floors of the building.
Bangor Housing Development Corp, a development wing of Bangor Housing Authority, spearheaded the project, which was designed by WBRC.
The apartment interiors make use of the building’s existing brick work, and come in studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom configurations.
The remainder of Freeses building is occupied by Maine Discovery Museum and 39 assisted living and elderly housing units on the top three floors of the building.
